What makes an EDD scope report defensible
A scope report earns trust when someone who did not write it can follow it: what was found, where it came from and what was not checked.
Start from the question the report must answer
Every enhanced due diligence case starts with a reason: a higher-risk customer, a counterparty with a complex structure, an acquisition target. The scope report should say what that reason is and what the investigation will therefore cover. A report without a stated purpose is hard to review, because the reviewer cannot tell what is missing.
Identify the entity precisely
Names are not identifiers. Record the legal name, registration number, registry, legal form and current status, and note any entity that was matched by name but not confirmed. Many weak reports trace back to two similarly named companies being treated as one.
Trace every finding to a source
A finding is only as strong as its source. Link each statement to the document it came from, with the document's date and the registry that holds it. The reviewer should be able to open the original in one step and check the extract against it.
Show what was checked and what was not
State which registries and document types were searched, and where information was missing, unavailable or in conflict. Silence reads as completeness. A short list of open items is more defensible than a clean page that hides gaps.
Separate the draft from the decision
Preparation and judgment are different tasks. The scope report prepares the ground; an analyst reviews it, challenges it and decides. Record who reviewed it and when, so the decision has an owner.
Record when the sources were retrieved
Registers change. Note the date each source was retrieved, so a later reader knows how current the report was when the decision was made.
Where automation helps
Retrieval, organization and source linking are repeatable steps, and they are where Bletchley focuses. The analyst's time goes to the questions that need judgment. See the enhanced due diligence overview.
